Fire Prevention week is the longest running public health campaign in the United States.
History of Fire Prevention Week in the United States
Since 1922, Fire Prevention Week has been observed nationwide as a way to raise awareness about fire safety. Each year during Fire Prevention Week, firefighters, teachers, and families work together to share important lessons that can save lives by preventing fires and reducing fire-related injuries.
The week is recognized annually in October, during the week of October 9th, in remembrance of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. That tragic event began on October 8 and claimed more than 250 lives, left 100,000 people homeless, destroyed over 17,000 buildings, and burned more than 2,000 acres of land. Fire Prevention Week serves as a reminder of the importance of fire safety and the role each of us plays in protecting our homes, schools, and communities.
The South Metro Fire Rescue (SMFR) Community Risk Reduction Team is excited to announce our 4th Annual Fire Prevention Week Competition!
This year, we are inviting all fourth-grade students to put their creativity to work and design a poster based on the 2026 Fire Prevention Week theme:⚡ “Charge Into Fire Safety™. Safe Charging Is a Superpower”
Students can create a poster showing what safe charging looks like and how we can all be superheroes when it comes to charging electronic devices safely. Posters cannot be created using artificial intelligence (AI).
Students may participate individually or as a class, and we encourage teachers to make this a fun classroom activity!
Competition Timeline:
- Poster submissions due: Friday, September 18
- Top 10 posters selected: September 23
- Community voting: September 23–28
- Winners notified: September 30–October 2
After submissions are received, SMFR will select the top posters to move on to the community voting round. The community will then have the opportunity to help us choose the winning poster!
Prizes:
🍩 Winning School: Donuts for the entire fourth grade delivered by the Fire Chief!
🚒 Winning Class: A VIP fire engine demonstration with South Metro Fire Rescue!
⭐ Winning Poster: The winning poster will be displayed at South Metro Fire Rescue fire stations throughout the community!
